Game of Thrones: Who will Survive the Battle of Winterfell?

Welcome to our ‘life-blog’ (no, not a typo!) of the most anticipated battle in the whole of Westeros! Well, not the whole of Westeros, a certain Cersei Lannister cannot be arsed, but she does hope the dead will be defeated and that the living will suffer many losses…. The rest are gearing up for the battle between the breathing and the blue eyed! (Tormund may have always had blue eyes, but he is living. FOR NOW.) After ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ put every key element on the map, and lured us into loving the characters we love even more, we just know that the next installment is going to rip all our hearts out. Who will live? Who will die? So, without further ado, here are some of own predictions…
House Lannister
Tyrion Jaime GoT pred
Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) and Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) enjoying a drink together. Are either of them safe in the North?
Who’s left?
Cersei, Jaime, Tyrion.
Who do we think is going to die?
Marieke: Cersei is riding this one out AKA sipping wine and shagging a little Euron on the side in the afternoon. The brothers are left. One thing, Bronn is heading towards them, but he will most likely not make it before the battle. So those Lannister brothers who are clearly happy to be around each other again, regardless of the awful circumstances. If they’re going to use the ‘Valonqar’ prophecy in the show, at least one of them has to make it. Or both. I would bet on Tyrion being the one going after Cersei. Jaime could join him, or he could die in Brienne’s arms. I would definitely cry (no I would not, but I would be sad).
Danielle: Yeah, Cersei is definitely safe for now, as she’ll be sitting out the action for this upcoming battle; unless she unexpectedly succumbs to alcohol poisoning. Tyrion also has to prove that he still has a brain after a string of tactical disasters, and I don’t think we’ll see the reemergence of that intellectual prowess until after the battle for Winterfell. Jaime’s an interesting one to predict. Although we’ve seemingly had foreshadowing that he’s going to die ‘in the arms of the woman he loves’, and that it’s with Brienne he’s chosen for that to happen with by riding North, Davos’ line in the S8 premiere has given me serious pause for thought. The idea of the Seven Kingdoms being ruled by an ‘honourable man’ and a ‘just woman’ seems to be hinting at the endgame fate of a certain one-handed man and a newly anointed, rather tall lady knight.
Chances of dying: Low to semi-high.
House Targaryen
Jon Dany Got pred
Jon (Kit Harington) and Dany (Emilia Clarke) seem like safe safe bets to survive the battle.
Who’s left?
Daenerys, Aegon and their children Drogon and Rhaegal.
Who do we think is going to die?
Marieke: Dany needs to go after the throne, so she cannot die. She will take at least one dragon, the other is up for grabs. Jon. Well, that is another story. Does he need fight out the conflict with the Targaryen heritage with Dany? Is she pregnant? Does he care to fight Cersei? Jon could die, again, because I cannot see a happily ever after for him and Dany. But it would be nice for him to survive the dreaded Night King.
Danielle: Both Dany and Jon are safe for now, chiefly because they need to finish that row they were having about the line of succession before the battle horns sounded. There’s no way that the showrunners wouldn’t milk that personal drama for all it’s worth. I do, however, think that either Drogon or Rhaegal are in grave danger from the Night King and Undead!Viserion, especially now that we know how vulnerable they are.
Chances of dying: Low, but a possibility. Little higher for dragon members of the house.
House Greyjoy
Theon Got pred
By putting himself in the direct firing line of the Night King, has Theon (Alfie Allen) all but sealed his fate?
Who’s Left?
Theon, Yara and Euron.
Who do we think is going to die?
Marieke: Yara is making the Iron Islands walker-proof and Euron is doing Cersei. Theon has offered to protect Bran. He had a nice and emotional reunion with Sansa, he rescued his sister and now he is going to make amends for what he did to Bran, Rickon and Winterfell. So a big part of his arc will be dealt with. But, Euron is also still around. Is Theon meant to die in Winterfell or avenge his (lousy) father and sister and kill Euron?
Danielle: With Yara and Euron apparently off the field for this one, the focus is all on Theon. With him set to defend Bran in the Godswood as reparation for his past mistakes, much as with Jaime, the stars do seem to be aligning to give him a redemptive death. The trouble with Thrones is that it’s great at subverting expectations. Should Theon unexpectedly get through this battle alive, it’s hard to imagine Yara taking back the Iron Islands and remaining safe.
Chances of dying: High.
House Stark
Sansa Arya GoT pred
Sansa (Sophie Turner) and Arya (Maisie Williams) on the battlements: will they survive?
Who’s Left?
Sansa, Arya, Bran. Half of Jon.
Who do we think is going to die?
Marieke: Jon we discussed in the Targaryen house. I do think there’s a difference between whether Jon or Aegon survives. People love Jon, but what will revealing his ancestry do besides angering Dany? Bran cannot die. He stated it, if he dies, the Night King will have won. He cannot win. Therefore Betamax Bran will continue to make everyone terribly uncomfortable. Arya still has to meet up with the Red Woman again. Either we will get a gaping plot hole and lots of sorrow, or we can be sure Arya lives to fight and shag Gendry another day. Unless… uh… Well talk about Gendry later. Sansa has had a shit time already, leave her alone, let her live, dammit!
Danielle: I really think they’re all safe for now because they have plot armour. It’s not impossible that Bran will die, but it would probably be the twistiest twist that the show has ever dropped on us. (Maybe that makes it more likely?) Arya still has names to cross off her list, not least of all Cersei, and Sansa is shaping up to be a decent political player, which makes her a prime candidate to lead when all the wars are over.
Chances of dying: We’ve had enough Stark deaths thankyouverymuch.
House Mormont
Lyanna Got pred
With Jorah’s chances of survival low, will Lyanna (Bella Ramsay) remain the future of House Mormont?
Who’s Left?
Ser Jorah Mormont and Lady Lyanna Mormont.
Who do we think is going to die?
Marieke: Ser Jorah is probably a goner. Even though he has a magnificent sword now, he’s probably going to die a hero for his Khaleesi. Lady Mormont was so adamant to fight, I am afraid for the future of her house, I hope she lives to boss more older men around!
Danielle: Yeah, sadly Jorah dying seems like a foregone conclusion, although it does beg the question, why would they bother to allow him to survive the greyscale, only to die in battle relatively soon after? What purpose would Jorah’s death serve? Ironically, I think Lyanna heightened her chances of survival significantly by refusing to stay in the ‘TOTALLY, COMPLETELY SAFE’ crypts.
Chances of dying: Very high.
House Tarly
Gilly Little Sam Sam GoT pred
Gilly (Hannah Murray), Little Sam and Samwell (John Bradley) getting some rest before the battle.
Who’s Left?
Samwell Tarly, Gilly and Little Sam.
Who do we think is going to die?
Marieke: No-one, because they already have had too much shit to deal with. Sam HAS to live and become the best Maester EVER. AKA any of these dying and you can wipe the floor with me! Also Sam possibly needs to write down all the information about the war, because the world needs to KNOW.
Danielle: Sam the Slayer is safe, mainly because he’s a lock to write the story after all is said and done. I have a horrible feeling about Gilly and/or Little Sam though. The White Walkers tried to take the little boy once before as he was supposed to be one of Craster’s offerings to the Night King. It’s also looking like they’ll be down in Winterfell’s crypts. You know, that place that’s full of dead bodies…
Chances of dying: Moderate. Sam may be the walker-killer, but Gilly and Little Sam won’t be sitting out this battle in the safest of places.
The Other Major Players
Who’s Left?
Grey Worm, Missandei, Brienne of Tarth, Varys, Gendry, Ser Davos Seaworth, Podrick Payne, Beric Dondarrion, The Hound, Tormund Giantsbane, Edd Tollett.
Who do we think is going to die?
Marieke: The Hound has a Cleganebowl to take part in, so he will have to head to King’s Landing. Grey Worm wants to live happily ever after with Missandei. She will most likely make it back to Naath, thinking about how the love of her life died in the battle of Westeros. RIP Grey Worm. Brienne is also very likely a goner, after being knighted and BEAMING because of it. Brienne’s smile most likely sealed her death. Edd is probably going down too, meaning there will be no official Night Watch member left (unless Sam is still one?).
Beric Got pred
Beric (Richard Dormer) seems like a shoe-in to die for the last time now that Thoros isn’t around to resurrect him.
Gendry also most likely is going to meet a brutal fate. He shared a night of consensual love with Arya. The only thing bugging me here is that the Baratheon House sigil is still visible in the new logo. Podrick might go down singing, not shagging. He will be missed. Beric Dondarrion is nothing without Thoros of Myr, and all we can do is hope he will kill many wights with his flaming sword in the meantime. Tormund needs to take out the walker giant, but he might not make it either, which would be an enormous shame for awkward conversations around the fireplace everywhere. Ser Davos could die, but wouldn’t it be fabulous if he survived all the battles even though he is not a fighter. Varys is going to die as predicted by Melisandre, but it might not be this battle yet, as I assume he will be hiding in the crypts. Or, will some of those dreaded walkers make it into the crypt…? Oh GOD RUNNNNN RUNN EVERYONE FOR YOUR LIVES HODOR HODOR HODOR!
Danielle: *Cracks knuckles, stares into crystal ball* Yep, Marieke’s right about The Hound. Although, I’m not entirely sure we won’t have a fake out death with him that somehow involves Beric sacrificing himself for him. Either way, Ser Dondarrion is finally going to meet the Lord of Light. I was totally convinced that either Grey Worm or Missandei would die during the battle until they started talking about going to Naath together after Dany stops needing them. Something tells me that neither are destined for heartbreak during battle, but rather a brutal fate when they try to leave their current boss behind.
Brienne Got pred
There’s a major difference of opinion over whether Brienne (Gwendoline Christie) will survive in the aftermath of receiving her knighthood.
I’m not sure I could disagree more about the implications of Brienne being knighted, mainly because I don’t believe it’s the pinnacle of her arc (see my thoughts about Jaime in House Lannister). Sadly though, I do think it foreshadowed Pod’s death, which is going to absolutely break her. Similarly, I think Gendry’s death may well serve to ‘re-humanise’ Arya after their bunk up. Tormund could easily bite it too. At least he’d die in the North: my brain doesn’t compute when I try to imagine him in the South. On the other hand, even though it’s entirely possible that Varys becomes a casualty to the crypts, I’d quite like to see him in his element in King’s Landing once again, going toe to toe against Qyburn. I also really, really, really, really want to see Davos survive by sheer luck. Aside from being pretty damn funny, he can read people well, which has served him well already in serving Jon. Should the former ‘King in da Norf’ die eventually, the Onion Knight has transferable skills.
Chances of dying: Extremely high. This group will most likely hold the most casualties.
Who do you think will bite the dust during the battle? Let us know in the comments…
